We chose rhododendron Loderi Sir Joseph Hooker to illustrate our comments. The best season to do this pruning which we shall call "formation", is the beginning of the fall but, for the purpose of this file, we did the forming while the rhododendron was flowering. This pruning consists in cutting a few number of lower branches every 2 or 3 years. You should not cut too many branches at one time because the sape, having fewer branches to feed, will excessively increase the length of the shoots of the remaining branches which will be, of course, weakened. |
